JournalismUCA has an active Journalism class that produces both a blog and a quarterly school newspaper. By blogging, students are given the opportunity to write frequently about people and issues that are important to them. The school newspaper offers a more traditional venue by which students are able to express their concern and opinions about the people and events that are a part of modern life today. A course credit is given to students in grades 9-12 who take journalism as a class. Additionally, student volunteers are solicited to write for bot the blog (The Crusader Connection) and the School Newspaper. (The Crusader Chronicle). G.K. Chesterton, perhaps the most interesting journalist to ever live, once wrote the following: “Journalism largely consists of saying ‘Lord Jones is Dead’ to people who never knew that Lord Jones was alive.” Chesterton's own journalism actually consisted of a whole lot more than the mere transmission of information, but he seems to be correct in noting that our relationship to the news media is typically one in which we the public are passive consumers of news stories. Journalism, The ClubThe Journalism Club will address this, and many other important questions, particularly those related to the role of journalism in the context of the internet and New Media, as well as questions related to the role of slant, prejudice, and worldview in journalism. Students in the Journalism Club will become familiar with the conventions of a variety of journalism genres and will have a chance to practice research skills, interviewing technique, and editing. The Journalism Club will work closely with the Yearbook Club. |
